Another homemade item I worked on this week is homemade fabric softener. Very simple to make. We learned about this too at our church Relief Society night. What a huge savings for this. I doubled the recipe to use 2 bottles of conditioner you need to use. Then filled up a gallon milk jug.
Better instructions can be found at TheFrugalGirls.com
I love the smell of this. And Suave conditioner can be found at the dollar store too for only 1.00 🙂
FABRIC SOFTENER
What You’ll Need:
*6 cups HOT water
*3 cups white vinegar
*2 cups Suave Refreshing Waterfall Hair Conditioner {or other favorite scent}
What You’ll Do:
Mix conditioner & hot water well, until conditioner is dissolved completely. Add the vinegar, and mix well. Store in a large container {empty fabric softener container, empty large vinegar bottle, etc}. Pour into a downy ball… or use approx. 2 tbsp. in the fabric softener spot in your laundry machine then wash!
My water wasn’t HOT enough so I had to put this over the stove to heat up and keep stirring till my conditioner completely dissolved. So be sure you use REALLY REALLY hot water! 🙂
I love the smell!!! 🙂 It makes my clothes smell great and feel great too 🙂 No more expensive fabric softeners again! 🙂
I bought a bottle of fabric softener two years ago and it’s still nearly half full because of a tip my dad gave me. You might find this useful… I soak a wash cloth in the fabric softener until it’s completely soaked through, then let it dry completely (pour excess softener back into the bottle). Then use the wash cloth as a dryer sheet. I use mine for about a month or two and my clothes are always so soft. I might try to make my own softener if I ever run out of this bottle. 🙂
Great idea! I’m a little afraid to try it…but it’s so cheap that I’m actually going to. Thanks for the recipe.
Stands to reason. I have used fabric softener in the past as a detangler for my hair!
I was wondering if I could add baking soda in this mix?
done this and its great love it its even cleaning out my washer…had a little mold growing and its going away
can you use other conditioners or just suave conditioner?
Sounds great I’m going to try this!!!!
I have done it with other conditioners as well. VO5 is good too but the Suave is so inexpensive that is what I usually use. I love it. It smells wonderful and the vinegar smell is completely gone.
Something else I do is get a gallon of white vinegar. Add 80-100 drops of essential oil of your choice to it. Give it a shake and use it like fabric softener. It works great! No soapy residue on clothes. NO vinegar smell. The clothes smell fresh and lemony(I use lemon essential oil from the health food store). And they are soft and fluffy.
